Health Benefits for

Seniors Who Sing

Mindy Mendoza – Executive Director,

Prestige Assisted Living at Lancaster

Have you heard the expression, “Sing like no one is listening”?

Belting out a song in the car, or alone in your home, or maybe even in front of people at karaoke, is an inherently joyful activity. If you’ve ever had a bad day and tried to remedy it by singing out loud, chances are the stress and tension of your day were eased, even just a little bit.

Singing has been shown to be a stress reliever, and it’s no different for seniors. In fact, stress relief is just one of the many benefits singing can bring to older adults, both from a physical and emotional standpoint.

Studies have shown that the physical benefits can span a wide spectrum – all the way from improving lung function and pain thresholds to reducing snoring.

As noted in the earlier examples, singing can also improve seniors’ moods. Music is the soundtrack to our lives, and the right song at the right time can take someone right back to an important moment or remind them of a loved one, bringing them the happiness that comes with those memories.

That happiness extends to those living with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Despite the challenges that come with memory loss, singing often remains a favorite activity. According to the Mayo Clinic,

“Musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s Disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”

It explains why studies have shown that some people living in memory care can recall song lyrics more easily than other words. And taking it a step further, remembering song lyrics can help memory care residents lay a pathway to other memories too.

According to the website Healthline, “Researchers found that singing songs learned at a younger age caused a spontaneous return of autobiographical details for many people.”

Singing With Prestige Senior Living With the emotional and physical benefits singing can bring, and of course the fun, Prestige Senior Living is holding its second annual Prestige Sings! virtual singing competition. Taking place across all Prestige communities, Prestige Sings! consists of three categories: residents, staff and group performances.

Beginning June 1, you can visit www. PrestigeCare.com/PrestigeSings to view video submissions of residents and staff performing their favorite songs, then vote on your favorites in all three categories. We’ll be narrowing down the contestants each week throughout the month, so be sure to check back regularly to cast your vote for the finalists.
