Suppose you’re talking to someone, and in the middle of telling a story, you lose your train of thought. It might not be a big deal, after all it happens to everyone from time to time.

But what if it starts happening with more regularity?

Whether it’s having difficulty navigating familiar areas, losing focus or failing to pay bills, many older adults start noticing memory decline as they age.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 11.7% of Americans over the age of 65 are in the category of experiencing subjective cognitive decline – which is described as “the self-reported experience of worsening or more frequent confusion or memory loss.”

It should be noted that these are people self-reporting issues with their memories and not conditions diagnosed by a health care professional. In addition, the number is certainly bound to be higher as not everyone discloses their memory decline, or even realizes it’s happening.

However, it can be the first step towards an eventual diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia, conditions that affect over six million Americans.

So if you find yourself being more forgetful than usual lately, what should you do?

The first thing would be to see a doctor. Among people 65 and over who reported having subjective cognitive decline, only 39.8% said they’d discussed it with a health care professional.

We understand that discussing cognitive decline can be a stressful, or even frightening topic, but it’s vital to discuss it with medical professionals as early as possible. With early interventions, there are steps available to slow down the decline.
