The Brain-Body Connection in Cognitive Health For Seniors
Mindy Mendoza – Executive Director,
Prestige Assisted Living at Lancaster
As we age, it becomes more important than ever to properly take care of ourselves. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep, staying in shape – all of those lifestyle habits we maybe took for granted in our younger days become vital in how they contribute to our overall wellness.
That word – wellness - can mean a lot of things. For most people, the word wellness conjures up thoughts of their physical health – the aforementioned acts of staying active, eating right and getting lots of sleep.
However, the benefits of an active lifestyle aren’t limited to our physical sides; there are tangible gains in our cognitive health that come from physical activity as well. Studies have shown that cognitive decline can be slowed by regular fitness. There is a brain-body connection whereby fitness positively stimulates our brains and helps keep us healthy in that realm as well.
Of course, it takes more than exercise to keep our cognitive abilities intact. Brain games, puzzles, hobbies, social activity, anything we can do on a regular basis to activate our cognitive side helps keep us as strong mentally as we stay physically from exercise.
It’s why at Prestige Senior Living, we place an emphasis on overall wellness in our efforts to keep our residents active and engaged.
In September, we’re focusing on the importance of cognitive health in our residents, and as part of that we’re running spelling bees at Prestige Assisted Living at Lancaster. The spelling bees will be a great o-p-p-o-rt-u-n-i-t-y for residents to engage in some friendly competition while also exercising their brain health. Events such as those help activate different parts of the brain and play a role in fighting off cognitive decline.
Our commitment to the overall physical and cognitive well-being of our residents are one of the driving factors behind an exciting
coming up that will be of particular interest to seniors who may be concerned about their cognitive health.
