TCU takes down No. 1 Kansas in Big-12 Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Desmond Bane had 16 points, hitting three free throws with 2.5 seconds left, to help TCU stun top-ranked Kansas 85-82 in the Big 12 quarterfin­als Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Horned Frogs (19-14) blew an 11-point halftime lead, and still trailed 80-76 with just over a minute remaining. But a parade of free throws knotted the game, and Alex Robinson’s driving layup gave TCU the lead back with 31 seconds left

Frank Mason answered with a pair of free throws for Kansas (28-4), but the Horned Frogs got the ball to Bane in the corner and he was fouled by Svi Mykhailiuk while putting up a shot.

• No. 2 Villanova 108, St. John’s 67 — At New York: Donte DiVincenzo had 25 points, Kris Jenkins added 24 and Villanova cruised past St. John’s in the Big East quarterfin­als at Madison Square Garden.

The Wildcats (29-3) set team tournament records for points and margin of victory. They will face Seton Hall in the semifinals Friday.

• No. 3 UCLA 76, USC 74 — At Las Vegas: Isaac Hamilton scored 22 points, and No. 3 UCLA overcame an uneven performanc­e by Lonzo Ball while holding off rival Southern California in the Pac-12 quarterfin­als.

Ball got into early foul trouble and the young point guard struggled as the Trojans cut into a 14-point deficit before missing a tying 3pointer and then two more shots in the final minute while trailing by three.

• No. 5 Oregon 80, Arizona St. 57 — At Las Vegas: Dillon Brooks scored 22 points, Tyler Dorsey added 21 and No. 5 Oregon pulled away in the second half to beat Arizona State in the Pac12 quarterfin­als.

Oregon (28-4) tightened up defensivel­y after a tight first half, holding Arizona State to 8-of-33 shooting in the second. The Ducks will face California in the semifinals Friday night.

• No. 6 North Carolina 78, Miami 53 — At New York: Isaiah Hicks had 19 points and North Carolina beat Miami in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfin­als.

The top-seeded Tar Heels (27-6) got 12 points from ACC player of the year Justin Jackson and held the Hurricanes to 36 percent shooting, setting up a semifinal Friday night against No. 14 Duke.

• No. 7 Arizona 92, Colorado 78 — At Las Vegas: Lauri Markkanen scored 20 points, Allonzo Trier added 19 and Arizona pulled away in the second half to beat Colorado in the Pac-12 quarterfin­als.

Arizona (28-4) had a hard time shaking the Buffaloes (19-14) in the first half before stretching the lead to 17 in the second. The co-Pac-12 champions shot 56 percent, made 10 3-pointers and held nearly everyone except Derrick White in check on defense.

• Kansas St. 70, No. 9 Baylor 64 — At Kansas City, Mo.: Barry Brown had 21 points, D.J. Johnson added 13 and Kansas State beat Baylor 70-64 in the Big 12 Tournament, clinching not only a spot in the semifinals but most likely an NCAA berth.

It was the second time the sixth-seeded Wildcats (20-12) have beaten the Bears (25-7) this season, giving them precisely the kind of marquee victory that the selection committee favors.

• No. 11 West Virginia 63, Texas 53 — At Kansas City, Mo.: Jevon Carter scored 21 points, West Virginia cranked up its trademark defense and Mountainee­rs cruised past Texas in the Big 12 quarterfin­als.

Carter made five 3-pointers and added three rebounds and three assists.

• No. 14 Duke 81, No. 10 Louisville 77 — At New York: Jayson Tatum scored 25 points and Grayson Allen provided an emotional lift during a second-half comeback to help Duke beat Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfin­als.

The Blue Devils (25-8) will play No. 6 North Carolina for the third time this season Friday night.

• No. 16 Florida St. 74, Virginia Tech 68 — At New York: Dwayne Bacon scored all but two of his 17 points in the second half and Florida State finally overpowere­d Virginia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfin­als.

• Xavier 62, No. 18 Butler 57 — At New York: Trevon Bluiett scored 23 points, including a tough foul line jumper that broke the game’s final tie with 16 seconds left, and Xavier beat Butler in the Big East quarterfin­als.

• No. 22 Notre Dame 71, No. 21 Virginia 58 — At New York: Bonzie Colson had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Notre Dame beat Virginia for the first time since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference, topping the Cavaliers to reach the tournament semifinals.

• No. 23 Iowa St. 92, Oklahoma St. 83 — Monte Morris was an assist shy of the second triple-double in Big 12 Tournament history, leading Iowa State past Oklahoma State in the quarterfin­als.

• UC Davis 66, Cal Poly 55 — At Anaheim: Chima Moneke and Lawrence White combined to grab 27 rebounds and No. 2 seed UC Davis pulled away late to beat Cal Poly in the first of four Big West Conference quarterfin­al games at Anaheim’s Honda Center Thursday afternoon.

The pair almost matched the total rebounds the Mustangs grabbed (31). Moneke had a career-high 18 rebounds. White grabbed nine. As a team the Aggies pulled down 47 boards.

• Eastern Washington 89, Sacramento State 70 — At Reno, Nev. — Jacob Wiley had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Eastern Washington rolled to an 89-70 victory over Sacramento State on Thursday night in a Big Sky Conference Tournament quarterfin­al.

Marcus Graves scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting to lead No. 7 seed Sacramento State (13-18). Justin Strings chipped in 17 points.
