Stanford blasts Sacramento State 10-0

STANFORD — Kris Bubic scattered five hits over eight shutout innings and top-seeded Stanford blew past Sacramento State 10-0 on Thursday night in the opening day of the NCAA baseball tournament.

Bubic (7-6) struck out 11 for the Cardinal (41-14), who will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday in the winner’s bracket.

Early solo homers from Quinn Brodey and Jack Klein helped the Cardinal jump ahead 3-0. Matt Winaker, Stanford’s leadoff hitter, tacked on a tworun homer in the seventh as the Cardinal surged to a 9-0 lead.

Justin Dillon (5-8) took the loss for Sacramento State (3228), which saw its eight-game winning streak snapped.

The Hornets will face BYU on Friday in an eliminatio­n game.

• Cal State Fullerton 13, BYU 2 — Cal State Fullerton pounded out 22 hits in routing BYU 13-2 on Thursday to open NCAA baseball tournament play in the Stanford regional.

Connor Seabold (11-4) struck out eight in seven innings, allowing two runs in picking up the win for the Titans (35-21).

Fullerton, the second seed behind host Stanford, scored three runs in the first and three more in the third inning to jump ahead 6-0 and chase BYU starter Brady Corless (6-2).

Hunter Cullen had three hits, including a homer and a double, to lead the Titans. Scott Hurst added a triple and a double.

Colton Shaver hit a solo home run for the Cougars (37-20).
