Liberty Oaks Pony Club hosts Sloughhouse rally
Liberty Oaks Pony Club hosted the Sierra Pacific Pony Club D Rally on April 22 at Starr Vaughn Equestrian Center in Sloughhouse.
A total of nine teams came from as far away as Eureka and Reno. Each team consisted of three to four riders, a stable manager, and a noncompeting C-advisor. Teams were judged on their horse management skills, as well as their riding skills in dressage and show jumping.
LOPC Team 1 earned fourth overall and first place in horse management, with Mattison Owning receiving recognition for exceeding her stable manager duties.
LOPC Team 2 placed third overall, with Cereya Mettler receiving “Reserve Champion” in Beginner Novice Division and Rachel Peters receiving “Champion” in Intro Division.
Congratulations, Liberty Oaks Pony Club!
For those interested, there’s a local Pony Club at Gateway Farm, 18025 E. Collier Road in Acampo. The club meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month, weather permitting. Horses may be available to lease.
Despite the name, this organization is not for ponies only, but horses, too. Members are taught three primary riding disciplines — dressage, show jumping and crosscountry — along with a very detailed horse management curriculum. It is a very structured program, teaching beyond just riding horses.
Good horsemanship extends far beyond skills in the saddle. In Pony Club, you will learn an impressive depth of knowledge in equine behavior and training, health and fitness, nutrition and veterinary care. You’ll learn about tack and equipment and understand their correct uses and maintenance.
Pony Club members also learn strong business skills through stable managementscheduling, oral presentations, instructing, record keeping, conducting meetings, communicating and interacting with others, resulting in becoming extraordinary citizens and developing lifelong friendships.
