RC planes takes to the skies in Walnut Grove

- By Frank Carlo Mills www.tokayrcmodelers.com,

The Tokay Radio Control Modelers will host its sixth annual West Coast Aerobatic Challenge for the entirety of this weekend. The large-scale and colorful event celebrates RC plane flying with classes for beginners, a freestyle show and a contest.

More than 28 fliers will demonstrate their skills at this event, parking is free, and all beginners and newcomers to the professional RC flying world are welcome.

This event is a very spectator friendly one, with free morning coffee and doughnuts. A hamburger lunch features barbecued burgers and drinks, with the fees going to support Tokay Radio Control Modelers. There will be basic classes for all newcomers to RC planes, a freestyle show set to music at noon, pilot raffle prizes and more. Classes come in several stripes, including freestyle and seniors.

The main attraction will no doubt be the freestyle show, a daring demonstration of three-dimensional aerobatics by 28 of the best RC fliers in the county — or even the country. There will also be a contest, directed by Wayne Dickey, coordinated by Don Brown and scored by Lisa Morana.

There is no charge for spectators or parking and no fee for first-time and contestant fliers, and contestants get free overnight camping.

This event will be held at the Tokay RC Modelers Flying Field for the entirety of the weekend, starting at 9:30 a.m. It will be hosted by the Tokay Radio Control Modelers of Lodi, and general admission is free. Registration is $45 except for competition fliers and first-time basic fliers.

The Tokay RC Modelers Field is located just south of Walnut Grove on Tyler Island.

Safety is paramount in this event, and thus all IMAC and AMA safety guidelines will be observed. All standard known sequences will be flown. The PetroMat Runway is 56 by 630 feet.
