Galt nonprofit will continue to aid pets with city funding
GALT — To aid lost and unwanted pets, the Galt City Council has appropriated $5,000 to continue to assist a new nonprofit organization to provide various community animal services.
Two years ago, council members approved an agreement with Sacramento County for animal control services. At the time and under the prompting of Councilwoman Marylou Powers, the city also made plans to move forward in creating its own nonprofit to provide these services.
Since then, the organization Purrfectly Pawsible has been founded and a board of directors established.
In the past year, its volunteers have helped facilitate animal adoptions through an inhome foster system, as well as trap, neuter or spay, and return feral cats.
The continued $5,000 in city funding will go toward stocking its pet food closet, providing supplemental veterinary services for low-income pet owners, maintaining a lost and found pet system and providing county-based information to the community on vaccination clinics, microchipping and pet licensing fees. In other action Tuesday, the council:
• Approved the allocation of $700 to the Elk Grove-Galt Community Emergency Response Team Powers’ discretionary funds in the current year’s budget.
• Adopted an ordinance repealing and replacing the municipal code regarding the cultivation of marijuana to comply with the state voter-approved Proposition 64.
• Adopted a resolution establishing the City of Galt Special Event Sponsorship Policy and, in separate action, sponsored 10 special events for fiscal year 2017-18 under the new policy.
• Approved an amendment to the community benefit funding grant agreement to extend grant disbursement period through June 30, 2018 for expenses incurred for construction materials for the McFarland Living History Ranch Barn Project. The amount allocated last year will be unchanged.
• Appointed Darlene Brown to the Beautification Committee to fill a vacant position and remaining term ending December 2018.
