Gums continues winning, takes Tokay Junior
Justin Gums was the overall boys champion at the 38th annual Tokay Junior Woodbridge Golf Championships held at Woodbridge Country Club on Wednesday and Thursday.
Gums, who was part of the Lodi High boys golf team that won a share of the Tri-City Athletic League title this spring, shot a 3-over 75 on the second day of the tournament, but held on for a 1-under 143 courtesy of a 4-under 68 on the first day. His score was good for a two-stroke victory over Matthew Sutherland of Carmichael, who shot a 7471 for 145.
Winners of the boys 14-15 division was Angelo Marcon at 76-71 for 147, and Gregory Lee at 80-82 for a 162 at the boys’ 12-13 division.
For the girls, Angela Bagasbas of Danville won the 15-18 division at 70-74 for a 144. In the girls’ division 12-14, Bedi Aishvarya of San Jose won with an 82-71 for 153 and a three-stroke win.
According to Rod Souza, coordinator for this year’s tournament, the field consisted of more than 100 of the top girls and boys junior golfer in Northern California.
Other local-area high school golfers included Lodi High golfers Jack LeBaron (sixth in boys 14-15 with a 155), Tyler Rowlands (tied for 16th in boys 16-18 with a 166), Gavin Shafter (20th in boys 16-18 at 175) and Evan Seibly (22nd in boys 16-18 at 179), St. Mary’s golfer Kevin Armknecht (tied for 16th in boys 14-15 at 173), Tokay golfer Zoe Offield (tied for 10th in girls 15-18 at 159) and Liberty Ranch golfer Jackie Schmidt (tied for 20th in girls 15-18 at 171).
Youth golfers from the area included Cedar Burns of Lodi (fourth in boys 12-13 at 177) and several from Stockton: William Bensch (third in boys 12-13 at 171), Albert Garibaldi (14th in boys 14-15 at 168), Skyler May (tied for 14th in girls 12-14 at 178), Brenna Preap (16th in girls 12-14 at 181), Amelia Garibaldi (17th in girls 12-14 at 187), Madeline Zunino (third in girls 15-18 at 152) and Jaryn Breakfield (30th in girls 15-18 at 227).
