Flash of winter hits Lodi before June heat

- By Kyla Cathey

Despite a few spikes of warm weather, Lodi’s had some unseasonable cool spells recently. On Sunday, the area got drenched by a quickmoving thunderstorm, complete with a little hail.

But things are expected to heat up — quick. Lodi could see triple digits by Friday, and the heat looks like it’s here to stay this time, said Alyson Hoegg, a meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

“You guys have had some very unseasonably cool weather across California and really across much of the West Coast,” Hoegg said Sunday.

Temperatures have briefly warmed up, only to drop back down again in recent weeks. From Thursday through the weekend, temperatures were in the 70s, she said.

The average for the Lodi area this time of year is 87, she added.

But Monday was expected to be the last day in that cooling trend, with partial sun and temperatures in the upper 70s.

Beginning today, days were expected to warm up, and the area could expect to see low triple digits by Friday.

With the weather heating up, it’s time to take care and protect yourself from the heat. Wear sun block and drink plenty of water while outside, stay in air conditioned areas during the hottest part of the day when possible, and wear lightcolored, loose-fitting clothing.

Also take care with pets — remember, if you’re hot, so are they. Make sure outdoor pets have access to cool water and plenty of shade. Don’t walk dogs on hot cement or asphalt, and don’t leave pets or small children in the car, even with the window cracked open.

The warm temperatures looked likely to last through at least the next few weeks, Hoegg said.

“Once the heat is here, it’s pretty much here to stay,” she said.
