Twice is nice for Canepa, Barajas

For a second consecutiv­e year, Lodi’s Emma Canepa and Nikki Barajas dominated the TCAL’s doubles tournament at In-Shape Marina in Stockton.

Canepa, a senior, and Barajas, a junior, defeated Lincoln’s Wendy Minn/Kate Shea in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 for the title. Prior to the match, CanepaBara­jas knocked off St. Mary’s Lauren Basso-Ali Gabbard 104.

In the quarterfin­als, the Flames’ duo defeated St. Mary’s Madeleine Heli-Izzy Garcia 10-4. To start the day, Canepa-Barajas beat Lincoln’s Kyleigh Tatum-Brynn Black 10-2.

In the consolatio­n finals, Lodi’s Mia Carouba-Franchesca Peterson got past Lincoln’s Erin Le-Juliann Johnson 8-6. In the semifinals, Carouba-Peterson won 8-3, and in the quarterfin­als took care of Patel-Johnson by an 8-6 score.

Winning their matches before falling in the quarterfin­als of the doubles’ tournament were Lodi’s Johnna Schroeder-Gabi Borra over Tracy’s Seanne Javier-Azeezat 10-0; Tokay’s Yadita Medina-Clara Luna over Tracy’s Anjali Patel-Carly Johnson10-7. Tokay’s Zoe Workman-Gwyneth Steele beat West’s Aria Jacinto-Gurshabad Randhawa 7-7 (4-6, retired).

Lodi, Tokay water polo teams hosting openers

Four Lodi area high school water polo and volleyball teams will continue their seasons next week, while a girls’ doubles team found success again in tennis.

In girls water polo, Lodi, which tied with Tokay and Lincoln for second place in the Tri-City Athletic League behind champion St. Mary’s, grabbed the No. 5 seed in the SacJoaquin Section’s Division I bracket. The Flames will host No. 12 Napa at Tokay’s swimming pool next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Should Lodi win its first round game, it would play the No. 13 McClatchy of Sacramento-No. 4 Granite Bay winner next Thursday.

The Lodi High boys water polo team, which took second place in the TCAL, is in DII. Next Wednesday, also at Tokay’s pool, No. 4 Lodi will host No. 13 Bear Creek. The winner plays the No. 12 River City-No. 5 Ponderosa contest next Friday.

The Tokay High girls water polo team earned a No. 2 playoff berth in D-II, and a first round bye. Next Thursday, Tokay will play the No. 10 Downey of Modesto-No. 7 Del Oro winner at the Tigers’ pool. The winner of the Downey/Del Oro-Tokay contest would play again on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Johansen High of Modesto.

Game times for the Lodi boys and Tokay girls are also at 3:30 p.m.

Liberty Ranch is the lone area volleyball team that reached the playoffs. Entering as the No. 15 seed in D-III, the Hawks will play at No. 2 Woodland next Tuesday. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

A potential Sierra Valley Conference rematch could take place for Liberty Ranch in the second round. If Liberty Ranch wins its opener, it could play No. 10 El Dorado, which plays at No. 7 El Camino of Sacramento, also on Tuesday. The second round match is next Tuesday.
