Giants get 3 in the ninth to beat Padres

- By Jerry McDonald

SAN FRANCISCO — Pinch-hitter Nick Hundley hit a two-run bases-loaded single with two out in the ninth inning Monday night to give the San Francisco Giants a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park.

In the ninth inning, Austin Slater was hit by a pitch, and after Gorkys Hernandez and Andrew McCutcheon struck out, Buster Posey walked and Evan Longoria blooped a run-scoring single to put runners at first and third. Brandon Belt walked, with Hundley singling in the winning runs past shortstop.

The Giants did all the damage off starter and loser Brad Hand, and after going scoreless from the second through the eighth innings.

Before many of the crowd had settled in their seats, the Giants had a 3-0 lead on an RBI triple by McCutchen, a double to right by Posey that drove in another run, and finally a two-out run scoring single by Austin Jackson.

Although staggered, Padres rookie starter Eric Lauer managed to make it through the fifth without giving up another run, and Giants relief pitcher and loser Reyes Moronta — without getting much help from his defense — surrendered a 3-2 lead that starter Jeff Samardzija held through five innings.

Pierce Johnson, the final Giants pitcher, was the winner in relief.

The Padres scored three times off Moronta in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Jose Pirela walked to open the inning, with Freddy Galvis hitting a onehop smash at Alen Hanson that was ruled a base hit. A grounder by Manuel Margot got past Evan Longoria for an error to tie the score, A.J. Ellis delivered a sacrifice fly for the lead and Chase Headley’s RBI pinch-single made it 5-3.

Samardzija gave way to Moronta with a one-run lead after five innings and 89 pitches. He walked three, struck out five and gave up two earned runs in his second solid start in three outings since opening the season with a right pectoral strain.

In the first inning, Samardzija worked out of a bases loaded jam in a 22-pitch innings, retirin Pirela on a pop to second and Galvis on a grounder to first.

The Padres scored their first run in the third inning when Manuel Margot dumped a two-out single to left in front of Gorkys Hernandez, scoring Franchy Cordero, who opened with a double.

In the fifth, with Travis Jankowski on third and one out, Christian Villanueva, hit a chopper to Evan Longoria at third. Longoria had a play at home, but couldn’t get the ball out of his glove, went to first and a run scored to make it 3-2.
