Tokay knocks off Lodi in season finale

For a second time in less than a month, Tokay beat Lodi in a Tri-City Athletic girls golf match.

Playing the league finale at the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club on Thursday, Tokay (7-3) posted a 253-273 win over Lodi (3-7 in the TCAL, 5-7). It is believed that this is the first time since high school girls golf was sanctioned by the SacJoaquin Section in the early 1990s that Tokay has swept Lodi.

The win puts the Tigers among the top three teams in the TCAL with St. Mary’s, which Tokay defeated recently, and Lincoln.

On the par-37 course in Woodbridge, Tokay’s Aleesa Ohata led the way as she fired a 40. Elisa Cabrera was next at 49, Hannah Hauschildt 53, Emma Buck 55 and Mariko Hashimoto 56.

Lodi’s top scorer was Desire Vasquez, who carded a 46. Catie Newport followed at 52, Carolina Seibly 53, Catelyn Gonzalez 58 and Holly Becker 64.

If the Flames had one of their other golfers in Devin Franklin, who was absent from the match, Lodi coach Tara Staal felt the match could’ve been closer than the final score.

“Tokay is hot and they are playing well right now,” Staal said.

Next Monday, Tokay and Lodi, along with the rest of the TCAL, will take part in the league tournament at the Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton. Should Tokay place among the top two teams at the tournament, it would advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournament, which will also be held at Elkhorn on Oct. 22.

The San Joaquin Athletic Association will also hold its league tournament at the same time that the TCAL is playing next Monday.
