Stockton brothers appear in court in molestatio­n case

STOCKTON — Three adult brothers accused by authoritie­s of having “substantia­l sexual contact” over a sustained period of time with a minor female family member appeared in court Wednesday and were ordered to return in three weeks to enter a plea.

The brothers were arrested Oct. 4 and remain jailed in lieu of between $2 million and $2.5 million, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. They are scheduled to return for further arraignmen­t at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 in Superior Court Department 8B in Stockton.

Pedro Castro Morales, 39; Bonifacio Morales Castro, 37; and Agustin Castro Morales, 30, each have been charged in court papers with two felonies suspecting them of “an act of sexual intercours­e or sodomy” with a child 10 years or younger between April 3, 2013, and April 2, 2017, and continual sexual abuse of a minor under 14 years old.

Bonifacio Morales Castro and Agustin Castro Morales also are charged with a third felony. This alleged crime is said to have occurred between April 3, 2017, and Oct. 4, 2018.

If convicted of the first charge, sentencing guidelines call for 25 years to life in state prison. — Stockton Record

Former N.Y. Times publisher to speak at Pacific

STOCKTON — Arthur Sulzberger, former publisher and current chairman of the board at the New York Times, will hold a discussion with students at University of the Pacific about media, truth and its impact on democracy on Friday.

Pamela A. Eibeck, Pacific’s president, will lead the discussion. Journalism students from Stagg High School were also invited to attend.

Sulzberger served as publisher of the Times for 25 years, building a global audience and turning the newspaper into a digital-first news organizati­on. The Times won 61 Pulitzer Prizes under his leadership.

The discussion will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Don & Karen DeRosa University Center, 901 Presidents Drive, Stockton. For more informatio­n, visit www.pacific.edu. — Kyla Cathey
