During Tuesday morning’s meeting in Stockton, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors presented Sheriff Steve Moore with a plaque commemorating his 36-year career.

“We have always appreciated your dedication to public safety, and the many things you’ve done to improve public safety in San Joaquin County,” Supervisor Bob Elliott said.

First hired by the San Joaquin County Sheriff ’s Office as a deputy in 1982, Moore was elected sheriff in 2007.

Moore’s career will end in January 2019, however, when Pat Withrow — a retired sergeant from the sheriff’s office who won the June 2018 primary election — takes office.

During his career as sheriff, Moore worked to expand the department’s community car program, advocated for a new jail and made part of the San Joaquin County honor Farm available for use as a homeless shelter, for which Elliott commended him.

“Through it all, you’ve been an excellent example of public service,” Elliott said. “We greatly appreciate all that you have done.”

Supervisor Chuck Winn also thanked Moore for his years of “leadership and dedication,” saying Moore’s legacy will be remembered by the board as well as by the sheriff ’s deputies and staff.

“Congratulations on your retirement,” Winn said. “I know you’ve got big plans, and I look forward to seeing what you’re going to do in the future.”

Smiling with pride, Moore thanked the supervisors, county staff and department heads he had worked with throughout his career, as well as the sheriff’s deputies and staff who worked under him.

“I’m very fortunate to have been in this position, and it’s my turn to thank you for the privilege and opportunity to serve as sheriff,” he said.

Moore lives in Linden with his wife Robyn, with whom he has two adult children.

He currently serves as president of the California State Sheriffs’ Association. He previously served on the St. Joseph’s Medical Center Community Board and as president of the Linden Lions Club.
