BERTON K. KUROKAWA

-

Berton Kurokawa, of Lodi, youngest child of Andy and Bette Kurokawa, passed away on November 3. 2018, at UCSF Medical Center, after a sudden illness.

Bert was born in Lodi, where he spent his entire life. Stricken by a chronic and debilitating illness in his twenties, which forced him to quit his job, he went on to suffer a series of other medical problems, including diabetes, dialysis and an eventual kidney transplant, as well as serious injuries further limiting his physical activity. Nonetheless, Bert maintained a cheerful outlook on life and took enjoyment from the smallest thingsshort rides on his scooter; watching movies at the theatre and at home on his big screen TV; playing with Tanner, the family dog; and watching political news and his favorite TV shows. He also loved family gatherings, enjoying conversations and laughing with his siblings and extended family.

Truly his mother’s son, Berton was artistic, liked by everyone who met him, and kind and generous to a fault. Although living on a limited income, he continued to donate generously to organizations for the protection of animals and the environment, as well as charities serving the poor. Like his mother, he was a fighter with an extraordinary ability to face great challenges and adversity without a single complaint. He eagerly tackled every problem, refusing to let his health conditions get him down- never once complaining or feeling sorry for himself. The only thing that disappointed him or made him angry was being unable to work.

Berton will be forever loved and missed by his nephew, Jason, his sister, Patsy, and his four brothers, Roger, David, Curt, and especially Clyde, who lived with Bert in the family home where, together, they looked after their mother until she passed away in 2012 at the age of 88. He will also be remembered by is two sister-in-laws Amy and Janice Kurokawa.

The youngest of six children, Bert was a happy baby and a joyful child who grew into an adult who was kind and friendly to everyone- someone who maintained an optimistic and cheerful attitude despite the many challenges he faced. Family and friends will always love and remember Bert as never complaining or feeling sorry, but for forever smiling, laughing and enjoying life.

A memorial service for Berton will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 8th, at the Buddhist Church of Lodi. Following the service, family and friends are invited to join the family for a late lunch in the church basement.
