- By Kate Feldman

Four police officers were shot in southeast Houston Monday afternoon while serving a warrant to suspected heroin dealers, while a fifth was injured at the scene.

All five officers were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, according to the Houston Police Department.

"This has been a tough day for our city but I certainly want to encourage all Houstonians to pray for all of our police officers," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a news conference late Monday.

The officers were serving a warrant from the narcotic's department in a residential neighborhood when the suspects inside began firing, according to officials.

Two of the five were in surgery after being struck "in the neck area," Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said during the news conference. Both are in critical but stable condition.

Two other officers are expected to remain under observation and the fifth was set to be discharged from the hospital Monday evening.

The officers have not yet been identified, but Acevedo confirmed that one of the injured officers was the 54-yearold case agent who had been shot several times in the line of duty before.

Two suspects were killed by police when they returned fire after breaching the door, Acevedo said.

Police began an investigation into the residents of the home after a neighbor reported that drugs were being sold out of the house, Acevedo said. The Houston narcotics department confirmed that the residents were selling black tar heroin.

"This evening's horrific attack on police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.
