Lodi kayakers’ boat tips over, rescued by peers

- — John Bays

LODI — Two kayakers were left stranded in the water when their boat overturned at approximately 12:30 p.m. Monday, prompting rescue efforts by the Lodi Fire Department.

“We had a full water rescue response out there,” said Battalion Chief Tim Ortegel.

Although the two kayakers did not have life jackets on and their boat was washed downriver by the current, Ortegel said they were rescued by two other kayakers near Mason’s Beach.

Ortegel also issued a warning to other kayakers.

“River levels are running pretty quick, it would be easy to underestimate the amount of water that’s moving,” Ortegel said. “Absolutely, people need to be wearing life jackets.”
