LOS ANGELES — The San Francisco Giants announced the signings of 23 draft picks on Wednesday, but first round selection Hunter Bishop remains unsigned.

Bishop, who was selected 10th overall, told the coaching staff at Arizona State he plans to turn pro and was enthusiastic on draft night about the prospect of playing for the franchise he grew up watching. A Palo Alto, Calif. native and graduate of Serra High (San Mateo), Bishop hit 22 home runs and posted a team-best 1.239 on-base plus slugging percentage in his junior season at Arizona State this year.

It’s unclear why Bishop has yet to sign, but it is not expected to be difficult for the Giants and the outfielder to agree to a signing bonus.

“Growing up, I went to so many different Giants games with my brother and my dad and it’s just a dream come true and I’m so grateful to be a Giant,” Bishop said on draft night.

Three other players the Giants selected in the top 10 rounds of the 2019 MLB Draft are also unsigned, but all three are still playing for their respective college teams in the College World Series. Second round pick Logan Wyatt and fourth round pick Tyler Fitzgerald are both playing for Louisville while eighth round pick Caleb Kilian is still pitching for Texas Tech.

Even though Arizona State was eliminated from postseason play last month, it’s possible that Bishop’s signing is being held up by the College World Series. The Giants were allotted a bonus pool of $8,714,500 and the organization needs to have enough money left to sign the draftees who are still playing.
