Warriors’ Cauley-Stein to miss training camp with foot injury

Willie Cauley-Stein, who was expected to be Golden State Warriors’ new starting center this season, will miss all of training camp with a foot injury, general manager Bob Myers announced Monday.

Cauley-Stein suffered a left mid-foot strain when he landed awkwardly after going up for a lob pass during a scrimmage last week. The Kings’ 2015 first-round pick (sixth overall) will be re-evaluated at the end of October. Given that time frame, Cauley-Stein is probably set to miss at least four regular season games, since the opener is Oct. 24 and the Warriors’ fourth game is at home against the Suns on Oct. 30.

“It’s disappointing,” Myers said during media day at Chase Center. “You’d like to have new players get acclimated in camp. The good news is that he will be back. But camp is a formative time for him and his teammates.”

Cauley-Stein was signed to a two-year, $4.4 million deal in July after leaving the Kings via free agency after averaging 11.8 points and 8.4 rebounds in Sacramento last season. He was expected to replace DeMarcus Cousins and Damian Jones as Golden State’s new starting center, but those expectations will be put on hold.

“It’s so exciting out here, new arena, new guys coming together. So not being able to be a part of that on the court ... it’s tough,” Cauley-Stein said.

Coach Steve Kerr said Cauley-Stein’s absence means Kevon Looney will take over at starting center and won’t be anchoring the second-team, like originally planned.
