Bosa’s grudge helps 49ers dominate Cleveland

- By Jon Becker

Two years ago, a beaten Nick Bosa had to watch Baker Mayfield disrespectfully plant his school’s flag at midfield. On Monday, Bosa exacted some revenge by planting the Browns quarterback onto the Levi’s Stadium turf.

Shortly thereafter, the 49ers rookie conducted his own flag ceremony for Mayfield.

Bosa and his 49ers teammates frustrated Mayfield for most of the night while storming out to a big lead before beating the Browns 313, but the rookie defensive end’s feel-good moment came on his late first-half sack.

Bosa is still bothered by an old-school ploy by Mayfield after the Oklahoma quarterback helped upset Bosa’s Ohio State team 31-16 in Columbus, Ohio.

Immediately after the win, Mayfield, never one lacking for confidence or swagger, grabbed an Oklahoma flag and raced to midfield and stuck his school’s flag right into the turf at Ohio State.

So, Bosa used the moment of his dragging Mayfield down and forcing an intentional grounding call against Cleveland at the end of the first half for his boastful reply to the Browns star.

Bosa waved an imaginary flag around before stopping to plant the would-be flag into the turf near where he dragged down Mayfield.

How’s that for evening the score?

Just for fun, Bosa got Mayfield again in the fourth quarter for his second sack of the night. Suddenly, the memories from what Oklahoma and Mayfield did to Bosa and Ohio State on Sept. 9, 2017 didn’t seem so fresh.

Bosa’s big game Monday was historical, according to ESPN Stats & Info. He became the only 49ers player in the past 25 years to get two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a game.
