Leadership Stockton eyes Micke Grove Zoo for project

- By Nicholas Filipas

STOCKTON — The Leadership Stockton class of 2019-20 has begun launching fundraising efforts to revitalize Micke Grove Zoo.

California’s oldest adult community leadership program chose the county-run zoo located in south Lodi for its class project. Much of the focus will be on improving educational programs and renovating numerous spaces, such as the children’s play area and theater.

Class member Kristi Capra said efforts will be also be made towards raising money so the zoo can have a new van in order to transport animals to local schools for educational purposes.

“I went there several times in my childhood in the ‘90s for various field trips. I count myself lucky to have had this convenient opportunity to learn about creatures we do not otherwise see,” said Capra.

Zoo officials have provided the group with a wish list of improvements that also includes animal training and handling for staff, enrichment toys for zoo animals, an interactive display, play structures and new flooring for the entire space.

The group hopes to raise $70,000, with renovation to take place in the spring and completion aimed for June.

To help pay for it all, Leadership Stockton is going to have a booth at the upcoming Zoo Lights event at Micke Grove on Dec. 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21.

Members will have a bake sale and hot cocoa for purchase along with

selling children’s shirts. Stockton Leadership will also host its annual bowling tournament at West Lane on Feb. 8.

Donations can also be made online and can be made by going to gofundme.com/mickegrove.

As of Monday, $1,030 has been raised.

Capra said Micke Grove Zoo was a big part of her childhood as it is with so many other children in the Central Valley. The zoo also plays a vital part in facilitating the breeding of threatened and endangered wildlife that are otherwise close to extinction in the wild.
