Niners will attend Kaepernick’s workout

The 49ers will see an old friend in Atlanta Saturday.

A league source confirmed to Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman that the 49ers will attend Colin Kaepernick’s Saturday workout.

The Niners are one of at least 12 teams who will be watching the former Pro Bowler. They’ll be joined by the Patriots, Jets, Giants, Broncos and more, according to a release from the NFL.

The Niners are in a bit of a pinch here PR-wise: They can’t afford to show a lack of faith in Jimmy Garoppolo while the team has started this season 8-1, but surely many fans would like them to show some support for their former star quarterback.

With the workout coming on a Saturday, many teams won’t have top decision-makers on the ground in Atlanta, which may decrease the odds of Kaepernick signing with a team.

Kaepernick helped lead the Niners to Super XLVII after the 2012 season, when he broke onto the scene after replacing Alex Smith as the team’s starting quarterback.

He played four more seasons for San Francisco, including the 2016 season when he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police violence and racial injustice in America.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract in early 2017 when general manager John Lynch told Kaepernick the team planned to release him.

Since then, Kaepernick has been out of the NFL, championing social justice. But he has continued making noise, maintaining that he’s been working out at 5 a.m. five days a week for the last three years hoping for another shot in the league.
