Raiders guard Incognito signs 2-year extension

ALAMEDA — At least one of the Raiders’ controversial 2019 offseason signings has worked out.

As players were cleaning out their lockers Monday, the Raiders announced that left guard Richie Incognito had signed a two-year contract extension.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported the deal and the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the terms as two years worth a maximum of $14 million with $6.35 million guaranteed.

Incognito was not available for comment.

“To get Incognito for two more years is big for us,” Raiders coach Jon Gruden said at his season-ending press conference. “He’s a leader for us. He has a lot of life in his legs and his body. He has the passion to to still keep going, and we think he’s one of the best interior players in football.

“To get him back in there with Rodney (Hudson) and hopefully a healthy Gabe Jackson, Trent Brown and Kolton Miller’s emergence gives us I think an offensive line we can really be excited about.”

Incognito was a boon for the Raiders’ offensive line, helping stabilize a unit that was hurt by several injuries throughout the year. Football Outsiders ranked Oakland the NFL’s fourth-best offensive line heading into Sunday’s games.

Incognito, of course, came with a fair amount of baggage. The Dolphins suspended him for the second half of the 2013 season for verbally and racially abusing teammate Jonathan Martin.

He missed all of last season after announcing, then reneging on his retirement following the 2017 season. Incognito began the 2019 season under a two-game suspension for threatening workers at an Arizona funeral home in the wake of his father’s death.

In training camp, Incognito said he was focused on redeeming himself, and throughout the season he became somewhat of a leader for this Raiders team.

Incognito missed the Raiders’ final two games of the season with injury, which could be a concern when signing a 36-yearold player to a two-year extension.

Incognito joined the Raiders last offseason along with receiver Antonio Brown and linebacker Vontaze Burfict as players with particular reputations. Brown was gone before the season even started, and Burfict was suspended for its remainder after a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Colts’ Jack Doyle Sept. 29.
