More resources needed to battle wildfires
Editor: I am writing to encourage everyone to write, call or email their state legislators and the governor regarding our devastating wildfires in California.
Our fire crews are doing an exceptional job combating the fires with the tools they have, but it is clear they need more resources. I know there are several crises confronting our state at this time, but the wildfires are an ongoing seasonal issue that we all agree is going to continue to plague our state and citizens. I also realize the state has already spent large sums of money to prepare, but it is apparent that this is an insufficient amount.
This is one crisis for which we can change the outcome. I propose we expend additional funds to purchase more fire trucks and aircraft with crews so that we can preemptively and strategically place them in areas where they will be needed. Some of you are saying we are already doing this. Yes, but I would argue the number of uncontainable fires is increasing before we can get enough equipment there to battle and control them.
A worthy use of additional state funds is one that would save billions in lost property each year and save countless California lives. We need to make every effort to contain the fires before they grow so large. Cal-Fire is already reporting a shortage of equipment and staff to combat the fires. This should not happen when we know the fire season is coming. I am also aware this is not a complete solution to a multifaceted problem, but it’s a beginning.
I invite everyone to phone or to send a letter to their legislators to beef up our firefighting capabilities. This should not be happening in the wealthiest state in the nation. ANTHONY MOLES
