DONALD NORMAN MAC LEOD

-

Donald “Mac” Mac Leod passed away on February 26, 2021 at the age of 91, with his daughter Kathy holding his hand. He was born July 18, 1929 in Boston to Roderick and Violet Mac Leod. He was proud of his Scottish heritage. He graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit, Michigan and received a full scholarship for football to Michigan State. After completing his first year of college, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years during the Korean War aboard a submarine. While stationed at Rough and Ready Island Naval Base in Stockton, California, he met his first wife Carleen Dietz from Lodi. They were married in 1950 and were blessed with two children, Kathryn Ellen and Kenneth Norman. In May 1985 he married his second wife Trudy Fowler, and was with her until he passed. Mac joined the City of Lodi Fire Department as a firefighter in 1951. He rose to the rank of Fire Chief where he served until his retirement in 1985.

Mac was a man of integrity and was fun to be around. His gregarious laughter would fill the room. He loved spending time with his family, golfing, smoking cigars, and was a self-taught beer maker. He especially enjoyed coaching his daughter in softball with his best friend Rich Spiekerman. He was a proud member of the Lodi Rotary Club, Odd Fellows Club, and the Woodbridge Golf & Country Club for over 25 years. He often joked that he would live long enough to score his age in golf. He loved watching professional sports and was an avid San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan. If he had a nickname for you or teased you in some way, it was his way of showing his affection and love.

He was preceded in death by Carleen Mac Leod; his brother, Arthur Mac Leod; son, Kenneth Mac Leod; and stepson, Randy Fowler.

Mac is survived by his daughter, Kathy Schlenker (Rick); daughter-in-law, Renee Mac Leod; stepchildren, Gary Fowler (Pam), Patti Bates; stepdaughter-in-law, Lisa; grandchildren, Jennifer Sena (Jason), Janelle Heinrich (Scott), Dr. Jillian Schlenker, Lindsay Mac Leod and Cameron Mac Leod; great grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew Heinrich and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Per his request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mac’s favorite charity: Firefighters Widows & Orphans Fund, P.O. Box 1413, Lodi, CA 95241.
