Giants promote Williams, place Yastrzemski on COVID list

- FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS — Kerry Crowley, Bay Area News Group

Utility man Luke Williams has rejoined the Giants in Milwaukee while outfielder Mike Yastrzemski has officially been placed on the COVID19 injured list.

Williams, who was acquired during spring training in a trade with the Phillies, made the Opening Day roster and was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Giants before being sent down to Triple-A Sacramento on April 19.

The Giants placed Yastrzemski on the COVID-19 injured list Monday after the left-handed hitter registered the team’s first positive test of the season prior to Sunday’s game against the Nationals. There is no minimum IL stay for players who test positive for COVID-19, but Yastrzemski is required to stay in Washington, D.C. for 10 days or until he produces two negative tests.

San Francisco did not have a replacement on hand for Yastrzemski on Sunday, so Williams takes the roster spot that still belonged to the outfielder during the Giants’ 12-3 win.

The Giants are hopeful that another left-handed hitting outfielder, LaMonte Wade Jr., could be ready to rejoin the team in San Francisco this week as Wade (knee inflammation) is expected to play his second rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.

Wade went 0-for-2 with a walk while playing four innings in left field with Sacramento on Saturday.
