CHP: Passenger killed in wreck near Isleton

-

SACRAMENTO COUNTY — A woman died after a pickup truck hit a tree early Sunday along Highway 160, along the Sacramento River north of Isleton, the California Highway Patrol said.

A Ford F-150 heading south on Highway 160 near Poverty Road in the Delta and struck a tree around 2:40 a.m., the CHP’s South Sacramento office said in a news release.

The passenger, a 34year-old woman, was trapped inside the pickup and suffered fatal injuries. The driver, described a 51-year-old man, was not injured, the CHP said.

First responders were called to the scene and attempted CPR on the passenger, but she was pronounced dead, the River Delta Fire District said in a social media post.

The driver told investigators that he had veered to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway, then lost control of the vehicle, sending it down an embankment and into a tree.

Responding officers determined the driver was not under the influence, according to the CHP, but the incident remains under investigation.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
