A human is a person at all stages

-

Editor: With the leaked preliminary Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade, the pro-abortion camp has become unglued — marches, protests, and even lurking outside justice’s homes.

It’s definitely an emotional issue. When it comes to abortion, only one question must be answered — “What is the unborn?” If the unborn is just a blob of tissue that is growing inside a woman, then it’s a non-issue, no justification is needed to have it removed.

However, if the unborn is a human being, then no justification can be made for having an abortion — it is murdering an innocent human being. Thankfully, science has answered this question — it is scientific proof that the unborn, in every stage of development, is a human being (the result of a human male’s sperm and a human female’s egg) with its own DNA. Thus no justification is adequate for having an abortion.

Well, what about rape or incest? While these only comprise about 1% of abortions, these are horrible tragedies. But we must go back to the question — what is the unborn? Since he/she is a human being, killing the baby is murder. It is never morally right to do evil to rectify a wrong.

What about the health of the mother? Only one condition really is in question — ectopic pregnancies. In these cases, the mother’s life is in serious danger and the baby doesn’t usually survive. Thus, the motive in dealing with such pregnancies is to save the life of the mother, not kill the baby. During the course of treatment to save the mother’s life, the baby’s life ends. But this was not the intended purpose. This is not an “abortion” in the strict definition of the term.

Finally, some pro-abortionists say that the unborn is not a person, which makes abortion okay. This is absurd logic. A human being is a person, regardless of the stage of development they are in. It’s impossible to separate personhood from being human. Marches and protests will not change the truth about abortion, but our culture of death refuses to accept it.
