- Rosalio Ahumada

At least one person died in a crash Thursday on Highway 99 in Galt after a minivan reportedly rear-ended a tractor-trailer parked along the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle crash was reported about 11:50 a.m. along the northbound lanes of Highway 99 near Simmerhorn Road.

The minivan was crashed into the tractor-trailer parked on the right side of the highway, according to the CHP’s online traffic incident page. The CHP reported that most of the minivan was pinned under the big rig’s trailer.

Excessive smoke was spotted coming out of the crash site, and the tractor-trailer driver was trying to extinguish flames with a fire extinguisher, according to the CHP.

The CHP South Sacramento Area Office confirmed on social media that the crash resulted in at least one fatality. At 12:44 p.m., the CHP said the far right northbound lane was closed to traffic.

Caltrans announced on Twitter there was no estimated time of when that lane will reopen, and drivers should watch for a northbound traffic slowdown in the area.
