Arlene Marie Herring, 88, of Lodi, California passed away on March 2, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and “Toy” Rowley, and her sisters Beverly Irene Lejander and Lawanna Jean Rowley. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Gerald Herring, children Vincent Bowers (Jackie), Denise Pettit, Kevin Bowers (Carol), Dena DeGarmo (David), Joan Herring Williams (Mark) and Julie Herring Kyzer, and sister Gloria Serpa. Arlene was the ultimate grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.
Arlene was born on January 18, 1935, in Modesto and was raised in Turlock before moving to Lodi in 1978. There she was involved in the Tokay Colony 4-H club, where she discovered a love for raising and showing rabbits. She was also a proud and active member of the Tokay Stitch N’ Quilt Guild.
Arlene is fondly remembered for continually supplying her friends and family with homemade items. Whether it was a loaf of her renowned pumpkin bread, a jar of her famed apple butter, or one of the many other sweet treats, she was known for making various types of goodies from her kitchen. Arlene was also a very creative seamstress of handmade quilts, tote bags, intricately detailed dolls, and other crafts from her sewing room. Giving these gifts to others gave Arlene the greatest joy.
Traveling around the US was another of Arlene’s passions. She made multiple trips to Arizona and Idaho and was able to visit Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, South Dakota, Minnesota, the Columbia River Gorge and various California towns for quilt and rabbit shows.
Arlene will be laid to rest in a grave-side service at Turlock Memorial Park on Friday, March 31, 2023, at 11:00am. The family will host a brief reception following the service (contact family for details). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Adventist Health Hospice – Sonora, or the American Cancer Society.
