ART PLAYER TAPPAN COLLECTIVE AND FASHION FAVE VINCE HOOK UP TO BRILLIANT EFFECT.

- BY MURAT OZTASKIN

Art player Tappan Collective and fashion fave Vince hook up to brilliant effect.

While it has sold work to the likes of Miranda Kerr, beau/Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel, and Jonah Hill, LA arts collective Tappan is focused on appealing to the new collector, too. Utilizing its international roster of artists (currently 57, from the States, Paris, London, Copenhagen…), the e-commerce platform, which celebrates its fifth birthday in June, eliminates costs, allowing Tappan to pay emerging artists more for their work and in turn sell that work for less, says founder Chelsea Nassib, an LA native who grew up on the Westside.“Part of Tappan’s mission is to broaden the entry point for people who want to know about art,” says Nassib, and begin collecting it.

With the recent launch of “Studio Series,” a partnership with CA-designed fashion label Vince, Tappan’s reach has never been wider. At its Grove and Venice retail flagships (The Grove, LA, 323-6020550; 1353 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 310-5269922; vince.com), as well as two NYC locations, Vince is showcasing and selling original, commissioned works from three of Tappan’s LA artists: handdyed prints from Cheryl Humphries; recycled skateboard sculptures by Aussie-turned-Angeleno Luke Chiswell; and limitededition prints from photographer Isaac Zoller. “Vince is a brand I’ve always admired for its edit, and because [its] founders are so influenced by art, design, and architecture,” says Nassib, 28. “We felt it was a good brand alignment.”

The partnership launched alongside Tappan’s new Arts District atelier, which mixes a showspace with five rotating artist studios—a space that, much like a clothing boutique, “undefines” what a gallery is. The concept has found a happy home in an everevolving DTLA. “There is so much physical space in LA, but there is also so much mental and creative space,” says Nassib. “People here are very open to pushing boundaries, and [exploring] newer ideas, newer ways of doing things.” By appointment only, 1525 S. “VINCE’S VIBE IS VERY ROOTED IN L.A. WITH THESE ARTISTS, WE TRIED TO SHOWCASE WHAT THE LABEL IS INSPIRED BY.”
