Bailey Hockman hit Emeka Emezie with a 26-yard, go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter and connected with Thayer Thomas for three more scores through the air as the Wolfpack rallied to beat a one-win Orange team. “I was far from calm. I was very upset, and I let them know it,” coach Dave Doeren said, after trailing 22-14 at halftime.

Dennis Grosel, who started at quarterback for the Eagles last year but lost his job to Phil Jurkovec, threw for two touchdowns after the Notre Dame transfer was injured and led his team to victory. Grosel added a 44-yard run that set up a falling, 11-yard touchdown catch by CJ Lewis that made it 27-13 early in the fourth quarter. “The starting quarterback gets beat out, yet he comes to work every single day. When his time came, he took the game over, and he made some huge plays,” coach Jeff Hafley said. “It’s such a good example for our young guys.” Grosel completed four of seven passes for 44 yards. “It’s kind of like riding a bike,” he said. “I did it last year, so I hopped right on and held on for the ride.”

Jeff Sims threw three touchdown passes and ran for 108 yards, both career highs, and the Yellow Jackets beat the turnover-plagued Blue Devils as the teams returned from long layoffs. Freshman Jahmyr Gibbs had touchdown runs of 61 and 26 yards in the first half for Georgia Tech, which ended a three-game skid, before leaving with an apparent hamstring injury. Thanks to Sims and Jordan Mason, who ran for 105 yards, Georgia Tech had 377 yards rushing even with Gibbs missing the second half.
