LEE, Catherine Yungoo

Catherine Yungoo passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on Thursday, April 29, 2021 with her loving family by her side. Born in Seoul, Korea to Woo Ik and Soon Ja Lee, Catherine attended Kyunggi Girls’ High School and Ewha Womans University. After working as a reporter for the Korea Times, she came to the United States in 1961 to study journalism at Northweste­rn University. She married her husband, Professor Peter Hacksoo Lee, in 1962 in Berkeley, California. They moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where Catherine obtained masters degrees in English Literature and Library Science. She then worked as a bibliograp­her at the University of Hawaii. After raising their two children in Honolulu, in 1987, the family moved to Los Angeles where Catherine worked at the UCLA Research Library as an Asian Pacific Studies bibliograp­her and as a reference librarian at Santa Monica Public Library. She cherished her roles as a devoted wife, mother and grandmothe­r. She enjoyed cooking for her family, travel with Peter, reading, tending to her orchid collection, and doting on her grandchild­ren. She is survived by her loving husband Peter, her treasured children, daughter Caroline Lee (Stephen Raucher) and son Joseph Lee (Anne), her beloved grandchild­ren, Samantha (“Sammy”) Raucher, Sydney Raucher and Bryan Lee, and her younger siblings, brother Seung Koo Lee, and sisters Myung Koo Cho, Eun Koo Kwon, and Kyung Koo Choung. We will always remember her determinat­ion, tenacity, and boundless love for her family. Funeral service to be held at St. Martin of Tours Church in Los Angeles. She will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum in Culver City.
