Canelo Álvarez scored a technical knockout win over Billy Joe Saunders, who withdrew after eight full rounds because of an eye injury Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Álvarez landed a right uppercut at about the 1:30 mark of the eighth round and Saunders stumbled under pressure from Canelo’s surge of blows. After his corner struggled to help Saunders open his injured eye, they reported he could not continue.

Álvarez was carried around ring in front a rowdy announced crowd of 73,126, the largest attendance for a sporting event since the onset of the COVID-10 pandemic in March 2020.
