David Patrick Sweeney

August 21, 1938 - November 10, 2020

-

David Patrick Sweeney, age of 82, of Prescott Valley, Arizona, passed away November 10, 2020.

As a long time resident in Arcadia, California he leaves behind his beloved wife, Alison. After meeting 26 years ago they were rarely ever apart. The two were completely devoted to each other and loved sharing how their love story began and continued every day thereafter. Also left behind, brother (Richard), 6 children (David Jr.; Victoria; John (Nancy); Richard (Shawna); William; and Kevin (Louise) , 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Simon Nabors, beloved nephew, John Nabors (Dot), and many other nieces and nephews that span from California to North Carolina.

In whatever State he lived and worked he left behind life-time friends and acquaintances who will always remember his hearty laughter, rich baritone voice, the teasing smile, his playfulness and good-natured attention to every detail of his work and relationships. Respected and revered by all, he was known as “Sweet Sweeney” in the way he treated people and used his voice to appeal to thousands of people via radio and as an elder at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arcadia. Whenever reading the Scripture lessons or performing in a skit, Pastors and others envied, and teased him about how members of the church requested he audio-tape the entire Bible so that they could hear his rich, resonant voice.

Both Arthur and Yvonne Liu, the owners of Multicultural Broadcasting Inc., based in New York, were indebted to him when, back in the 90’s, he scouted for the perch for MRBI’s West coast headquarters. He procured the “747” building in Pasadena, where the burgeoning multi-language radio and TV stations took roots. The L.A. office provided a challenging habitat for Sweeney as he was surrounded by Chinese, Korean and Spanish speakers, some of them, in turn, were also more than a little intimidated by his position as Executive Vice President as well as a fear of communication because of their own language constraints. However, David had an uncanny knack of alleviating their inhibition with doses of verbal placebo that always produced roaring laughter and immediate intimacy.

Long before his leadership at MRBI, he was manager (sales, general, and regional) of KEZY KGBS, KFOX, KMEX TV, KRML, KIEV, KALI (vicepresident).

As valued as he was as a TV and Radio personality and manager, he was even more loved as a friend to countless people As he interacted with others he always seemed to make a difference in the lives of those around him.

If you knew David, you knew he was a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arcadia, serving as an elder and on many other committees. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent for missionary work to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Arcadia, CA.
