Retired plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Harold Rosenfield’s love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. Hal passed away April 16th, at the age of 84. Surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, they will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Harold completed his undergraduate degree from his beloved UCLA. His education continued from there, graduating from UCSF in 1962. Hal did his residencies in Torrance, San Francisco and Scottsdale. While in Arizona, in the plastic program, Hal borrowed his Uncle’s plane and flew to different Indian reservations. He landed on dirt fields, after locating the town’s name from the water towers.

Harold practiced plastic surgery in Torrance, for over 40 years. In his later years of practice, Hal would volunteer his time and experience on medical missions with Operation Smile and Rotoplast. These missions fulfilled his desire to help children with a cleft lip and palate condition, while traveling the world.

He was a lifelong student of history often lecturing his children, wife and friends during travels, concerning the historical significance of the cities and countries they were visiting. For many years, Hal participated in Civil War reenactments. He fought for both the North and the South, and even participated in the reenactment of the surrender at Gettysburg.

After his retirement, Hal enrolled in classes at Long Beach State University. He would often be seen riding his Harley Davidson to class. At one point the administration at Long Beach State was going to revoke his student status because he did not appear to be working towards a degree. He politely wrote back that he does not need another degree and was merely there to audit classes. His student status was reinstated.

Harold was happiest and most proud, when he was surrounded by his family. He was always the biggest advocate and fan for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Hal was a husband, father, doctor, student, artist, animal lover, and an avid Serra High School football fan. But, perhaps his closest family and friends will always remember him as a die-hard UCLA Bruin fan! He rarely missed a home basketball or football game for UCLA. He would joke, that after he died he wanted someone from the family to bring his ashes to UCLA home games. Now how to make that happen?

Harold is survived by his wife, Kimberly (of 42 years), his brothers Jerry and Bob, and sister Joy. He also leaves his 2 children and their spouses, Jenny (Johnny), Steven (Mary) and three step children, Kristin (Ralph), Scott (Amy) and Heidi. Grandpa’s Hal 9 grandchildren are, Emily, Rachel, Justin, Jack, Chloe, Kurt, Luke, Nate , Lucy and great granddaughter, Katherine.
