-

In the early hours of April 28, 2021, on a full moon, we said goodbye to our Dad, Gampy, husband, and friend. Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years Nancy (formerly Powell), brother William F. Hardaway, children Chris Adams (Andrew Kasiske), Robert Beverly Hardaway III, Betsy Birkenbeuel (Gary), Ginny Hardaway-Gutierrez, grandchildren Ashley Adams Payne (Garrett), Grace and Jack Birkenbeuel, Sabrina and Guillo Gutierrez, and many nieces and nephews.

A true legend, Bob lived an illustrious life of more than 93 years. Bob’s unwavering devotion to his family was something to be truly admired. He had a unique zest for life - camp counseling at Camp Virginia, playing football for UVA, beginning his 50 plus marathon running career at age 50, white water rafting at 85, auditing college courses in his twilight years in his lifelong quest for higher learning and knowledge, three decades spent returning to Virginia every summer to grade CFA papers, UCLA Bruin Woods family camp through 2019, traveling the world at 92, playing Bridge five times/week, enjoying summer concerts at the Arboretum and weightlifting up until the very end.

Born in Richmond, Virginia to Grace and Robert Hardaway, Bob grew up in Blackstone, Virginia graduating high school at age 16, first in his class-Valedictorian, President of the Student Body, lettering in Football, Baseball, and Captain of the Basketball team in senior year. He promptly entered UNC Chapel Hill and while maintaining studies, also lettered on the Track Team, and was Baseball Team Outfielder and Assistant Manager, Varsity Basketball Team. In 1945 Bob entered the USN newly emerging Radar Program and later Naval Officer Training Program. He was honorably discharged in 1946, enrolling at University of Virginia, and graduating in 1949 with a BS in Commerce. Bob was quickly recruited to join the Management Training Program at State Planters Bank in Richmond, thus beginning his career as an Investment Professional in1950.

Bob and Nancy married in August 1950 and, in 1961, moved their four children from Richmond to California for a new job opportunity, ultimately settling in South Pasadena. They were active at First United Methodist Church, Pasadena, Pasadena Symphony Holiday Look In, and enjoyed trips back to Virginia, taking many cruises and playing bridge with friends. In 1971, Bob took a position with Scudder Stevens and Clark where he became managing director in 1981, retiring in 1990 to do his greatest work - enjoying his grandchildren. There was not an event that he missed for a single grandchild including every soccer, tennis and lacrosse match, equestrian competition, baseball game, graduations and other milestones.

Throughout his career Bob was a leader in the Chartered Financial Analyst Society (CFA) joining the Richmond Society of Financial Analysts in 1952 before it was the CFA and in 1966, as one of the earliest CFA members. He was president of the Los Angeles CFA Society from 1985-1986, receiving the Outstanding Society Member of the Year Award in 1987 for his work in developing the CFA Program Exam Review course at USC with Guil Babcock which remains the crown jewel of the CFA Society LA. Bob was instrumental in the eventual merger of FAF and ICFA into AIMR in 1990; its first AIMR Western Regional Director, and elected Chair of Regional Directors. In 1992 his CFA efforts focused on developing the CFA Society Leadership Conference to help the newly merged AIMR organization come together, receiving the Society Leader Award in 2001 for these efforts. In 2006 Bob received the CFA Tuttle Award and in 2018, the CFA Special Service Award.

Bob’s strong interest in education manifested in creating the CFA Program Exam Review course and his significant educational philanthropy, particularly at UVA where he endowed an incredibly popular Personal Finance Course teaching students how to understand and manage their own personal finances as they enter the working world.

Bob impacted so many lives. He made a difference and will be forever missed. The family wishes to thank Five Star Home Hospice and his devoted caregivers from Foothill Homecare Partners, particularly Sybil Zarate.

A Celebration of Life will happen this summer when we can safely gather together, tentatively planned August 2021. Updates will be posted on the website Legacy.com
