Swimmers Dressel, Ledecky dominate at U.S. trials

Caeleb Dressel added another event to his Olympic program in Tokyo, powering to a dominating victory in the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials Saturday night.

No one was even close to Dressel as he finished in 49.87 seconds — just off his world record of 49.50 set two years ago.

Tom Shields claimed the expected second spot on the U.S. team by touching next in 51.19. The former Edison High star was an Olympian in 2016, taking gold as part of the 400 medley relay.

Katie Ledecky blew away the field in the 800 freestyle, winning by more than five seconds. Ledecky locked up her fourth individual race at the Olympics with a time of 8 minutes, 14.62, adding to her victories in the 200, 400 and 1,500 free.

Valarie Allman won the discus at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Ore., and earned a spot at the Tokyo Games.

Sha’Carri Richardson blew away the field in the 100-meter semifinals in a windaided 10.64 seconds, then again in the final in 10.86. With her performanc­e, the 21-year-old out of Louisiana State picked up a spot in the Olympics and a national title while also setting up a possible showdown with Jamaican world champion

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Also, Garrett Scantling leads the decathlon after five events. Scantling had 4,494 points — 70 more than

Kyle Garland of Georgia.

A member of Uganda’s Olympic team tested positive for the coronaviru­s and was barred entry into Japan, in the first detected infection among arriving athletes for the Tokyo Games opening in five weeks. The team member who tested positive was not identified.
