Padres’ Melvin: Tatis feels remorse

San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin reached out to suspended All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. in a phone call Saturday and said the player “feels remorseful.”

Melvin did not reveal anything else about what he termed a “private conversati­on” with Tatis, whose 80-game ban for testing positive for a performanc­e-enhancing anabolic steroid was announced Friday.

The first-year Padres skipper said he did not feel the need to discuss the Tatis suspension with other players again before Saturday’s game.

Kiermaier mulls ’23

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier expects to be ready for 2023 opening day following season-ending left hip surgery, but he also understand­s that his time with the Rays could be over.

“I’m driven, I’m motivated, this is like, for me, chasing something again,” said Kiermaier, in the final season of a six-year contract.
