In 1958, Newman starred with Orson Welles in THE LONG, HOT SUMMER
and with Elizabeth Taylor
in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (2). He co-starred with in the 1966 Alfred Hitchcock thriller (3).
In a classic scene from the 1967 prison drama
(4), Newman’s character claims he can eat 50 hardboiled eggs. The Library of Congress and the Academy Film Archive selected 1961’s THE HUSTLER (5), about an ambitious pool shark (Newman) taking on Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason), for preservation. He revisited the role,
alongside Tom Cruise, in the 1986 Martin Scorsese–directed follow-up THE COLOR OF MONEY (6), for which he won a Best Actor Oscar. In his last live-action big-screen role] Newman played a Depression-era mobster in 2002’s ROAD TO PERDITION (7). He voiced
Doc Hudson in CARS (2006) and CARS 3 (2017; using archived recordings) (8).
