Baffert’s Taiba picks up second Grade 1 victory

Taiba, runaway winner of the Santa Anita Derby, picked up his second Grade 1 win at Saturday’s $1-million Pennsylvan­ia Derby. The 3-year-old son of Gun Runner assumed a stalking position for the most of the 11⁄8-mile race before coming off the rail and going to the center of the track entering the stretch and winning by three lengths.

Taiba increased his winnings to more than $1.2 million, getting closer to his $1.7million purchase price as a 2-year-old. He is owned by Amr Zedan, who owned disqualifi­ed Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, and is trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith.

Taiba beat a quality field in a race including four other Kentucky Derby entrants.

Taiba was the favorite and paid $4.80, $3.00 and $2.60. Zandon, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes, was second and Cyberknife, winner of the Arkansas Derby and Haskell Stakes, was third. in 1974 and 1975 . ... Former Georgia Tech coach Bill Fulcher died at 88.

Noah Gragson opened the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs by winning his fourth race in a row at Texas Motor Speedway, locking up the first spot in the round of eight . ... Brad Keselowski won the pole for Sunday’s Cup race at Texas that will start the round of 12.

Brandon Nakashima will face former NCAA champion Marcos Giron in the San Diego Open singles final, an all-Southern California matchup between friends . ... Filling in for the retired Roger Federer at the Laver Cup, Matteo Berrettini got a win for Team Europe when he edged Team World’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (11), 4-6, 10-7 . ... Zheng Qinwen continued her run at the Toray Pan Pacific tournament by beating the sole remaining seed, Veronika Kudermetov­a, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals.

A’ja Wilson scored 20 points to help the U.S. beat China 77-63 in the women’s World Cup. The U.S. has won 25 consecutiv­e World Cup games since losing in the 2006 semifinals . ... New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum agreed to a two-year, $64-million extension.

Amanda Serrano beat Sarah Mahfoud by unanimous decision to unify the women’s featherwei­ght boxing titles.
