Interim coach wins in his debut as Colorado shocks Cal

-

The Colorado Buffaloes had an even bigger celebration in store after their fans stormed Folsom Field in the aftermath of interim head coach Mike Sanford’s successful debut Saturday.

Back in the raucous locker room following their 20-13 overtime upset of Cal in Boulder, Colo., running back Deion Smith was up and walking around after being immobilized and stretchered off the field in the fourth quarter.

“So a lot of fears that everybody has when somebody comes off on a stretcher, I was able to assure the team that’s nothing that we have to be concerned with,” Sanford said.

And watching him walking around afterward was the really big boost.

After J.T. Shrout threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Montana Lemonious-Craig in overtime, Jack Plummer had Mason Starling wide open for the score on firstand-goal from the 10 for Cal but strong safety Trevor Woods arrived just after the soft pass and popped the ball loose.

At Washington 49, Arizona 39: Michael Penix Jr. passed for a school-record 516 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score to pace the Huskies. Penix hit Rome Odunze on scoring passes of 45 and 48 yards in the decisive third quarter.

Stanford 16, at Notre Dame 14: Joshua Karty’s 43yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter lifted the Cardinal. Stanford opened a 13-0 lead in the third quarter before Notre Dame rallied to take a 14-13 lead. Casey Filkins rushed for 91 yards in 32 carries to pace the Cardinal.

At Oregon State 24, Washington State 10: Jack Colletto scored on two short-yardage carries and Anthony Gould caught a touchdown pass as the Beavers prevailed. Ben Gulbranson, in his second career start, passed for 141 yards and one touchdown.
