GROUP E SPAIN VS. GERMANY

-

Where: Al Bayt Stadium

Time:11 a.m. PST

TV: FS1, Telemundo, Peacock Premium

The buzz: This is the only group-stage matchup of former champions, though the teams have gone in different directions since winning their titles. Spain, (1-0), which won its only World Cup in 2010, made it to the knockout phase in Russia and to the semifinals of the European Championship last year before putting together the most dominant first-round performance in this tournament in its rout of Costa Rica. That game marked the return of tiki-taka, the ball-possession game the Spanish made famous. Spain completed 978 passes while watching 19-year-old Barcelona midfielder Gavi become the youngest player to score in a World Cup since Pelé in 1958. Germany, meanwhile, has won just one World Cup game since capturing its fourth title in 2014. It put nine shots on goal in the loss to Japan but aside from Ilkay Gundogan’s first-half penalty kick it could get nothing by Japanese keeper Shuichi Gonda. A win here would put Germany (0-1) back on track to advance while a win for Spain would send it to the next round.
