USTA hopeful for Djokovic

After Novak Djokovic withdrew from tournament­s in Florida and California because he still can’t travel to the United States as a foreign citizen who is not vaccinated against COVID-19, a U.S. Tennis Assn. spokesman said the group is “very hopeful” the top-ranked player will be allowed into the country for the U.S. Open in August.

“Policies concerning access to the United States are determined by the White House. We are very hopeful that the policy preventing Novak Djokovic from entering the United States will be rescinded, or lapse, in the near future,” the USTA’s Chris Widmaier wrote to the Associated Press. “No COVID-19 restrictio­ns are in place at the U.S. Open for any player, fan or other attendee.”

Sergio Romo will retire as a member of the San Francisco Giants after helping the franchise win three World Series titles . ... New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo has a strained knee and ankle and will be reevaluate­d on a week-to-week basis, general manager Billy Eppler said.

San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer declined to take part in pregame warmups Saturday night, saying the team’s decision to wear Pride-themed jerseys in support of the LGBTQ community runs counter to his religious beliefs.

Reimer said in a statement that he made the decision based on his Christian beliefs, adding that he “always strived to treat everyone with respect” and that members of the LGBTQ community should be welcome in hockey.
