Baptism flap
Re “Mormons baptized slain journalist,” March 1
The unsolicited, posthumous baptism of Daniel Pearl by the Mormon Church is rather presumptuous, to say the least.
In her impressively classy statement, Pearl’s mother, Ruth, acknowledged the church’s good intentions to her son’s salvation as it sees it. Still, the unwanted act seems hard to justify.
Perhaps equally as absurd would be a hypothetical, well-meaning rabbi posthumously conducting a bar mitzvah ceremony for a Mormon, acknowledging his worthwhile, respected accomplishments before he died without ceremoniously entering adult manhood. And need I mention the possibility of posthumous circumcision?
