Orange ends Uconn streak

Connecticu­t Coach Jim Calhoun said he didn’t think any team would ever do what his did last year — win five games in five days to earn a conference tournament title.

It took another memorable Big East tournament matchup with Syracuse to end the Huskies’ 13-game postseason winning streak.

Dion Waiters had 18 points and James Southerlan­d scored all 10 of his points over the final eight minutes to lead No. 2 Syracuse to a 58-55 victory Thursday in the quarterfin­als of the Big East tournament at New York

The top-seeded Orange (31-1) won their 11th straight game overall and advanced to face fourth-seeded Cincinnati in the semifinals on Friday night at Madison Square Garden. The Bearcats beat No. 13 Georgetown, 72-70 in double-overtime, when Cashmere Wright banked in a runner with 7.6 seconds left.

San Diego State 65, Boise State 62: Jamaal Franklin made an off-balance threepoint­er at the buzzer to give the top-seeded and No. 18 Aztecs a victory over the eighth-seeded Broncos in the Mountain West Conference tournament at Las Vegas. Franklin, the MWC player of the year, lifted the Aztecs (25-6) after they got sloppy against the scrappy Broncos (13-17).

Baylor 82, Kansas State 74: Suspended by the NCAA right before last year’s Big 12 tournament, Perry Jones III made up for lost time. The 6foot-11 Baylor sophomore made all eight of his shots in the first half and wound up with a career-best 31 points while leading the hot-shooting Bears over the Wildcats at Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas 83, Texas A&M 66: Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 26 points, and the No. 3 Jayhawks (27-5) began pursuit of their third consecutiv­e Big 12 tournament title.

Indiana 75, Penn State 58: Jordan Hulls scored 20 points and Cody Zeller finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to help the Hoosiers pull away in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at Indianapol­is. The Hoosiers (25-7) ended a sixgame losing streak in the tourney and won their first postseason game since the first round of the 2007 NCAA tournament.

Marshall 105, Tulsa 100: Deandre Kane scored a career-high 40 points to lead the Thundering Herd to a triple-overtime victory in the in the Conference USA tournament quarterfin­als at Memphis, Tenn. Kane made 15 of 32 shots and scored seven points in the final 31 seconds of the second overtime.
