QUITE A SPLASH

Los Angeles designer Trina Turk dives into summer with a new Palm Springs-inspired clothing line and much more.

Trina Turk has been a Palm Springs weekend enthusiast for two decades. Here she talks about her favorite diversions.

TO EAT

The mango and lobster salad at Norma’s at the Parker Palm Springs [4200 East Palm Canyon Drive] is one of my favorites. I also like Cheeky’s [622 N. Palm Canyon Drive] for breakfast and lunch, although there is always a line, so be prepared to wait. Birba [also 622 N. Palm Canyon Drive] is a restaurant that has great Italian salads and pizzas and a lounge-y patio. It has the same owner as Cheeky’s. For something fancier and French and old school, there’s Le Vallauris [385 W. Tahquitz Canyon Way], which is fun. There’s also this place called Rick’s [1973 N. Palm Canyon Drive], which is your basic old-school coffee shop where you can get standard breakfast fare.

FOR RECREATION

I like the easy “hike” — it’s more like a walk — into Tahquitz Canyon [just off South Palm Canyon Drive]. It’s really beautiful, with a waterfall at the end depending upon the time of year. To see art, I would go to the Palm Springs Art Museum [101N. Museum Drive] or the Michael H. Lord Gallery [1090 N. Palm Canyon Drive]. There’s also quite a bit of vintage painting and sculpture at the galleries and shops around town. The Palm Springs Modernism Show [ dolphinfairs .com/palmsprings] in February is another place to see great art. For live music in the desert, it’s all about the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival [Coachella.com].

TO BUY

The neighborhood around our store [ Trina Turk, 891 N. Palm Canyon Drive] has exploded, mostly with home furnishings stores but also with fashion. Wil Stiles [875 N. Palm Canyon Drive] has men’s and women’s. There’s also a new vintage store called Déjà Vu [441 S. Palm Canyon]. In the Galleria, there’s a new high-end vintage shop called Mr. Cox [457 N. Palm Canyon].

Bon Vivant [also 457 N. Palm Canyon] is one of my favorite shops. Modern Way [745 N. Palm Canyon] on the main drag is great for furniture, and Studio 111 [2675 N. Palm Canyon] is more California craft. The Estate Sale Co. [4185 E. Palm Canyon Drive] across from the Parker has a small jewelry section with everything from gaudy ’80s costume jewelry to Mexican sterling. There is also a little strip of stores in Cathedral City that I like, including Hedge [68929 Perez Road], which is a curated assortment of everything from things from Bali to vintage furniture with an interesting point of view. Then, there is a little antique mall called Spaces [also at 68929 Perez Road], which is great. I only found out about them three or four years ago. I thought I knew about everything!
