Cal gets to its first Final Four

California advanced to the Final Four for the first time in school history, rallying for a 65-62 overtime victory over Georgia on Monday in the regional final at Spokane, Wash.

Layshia Clarendon scored 17 of her 25 points in the second half and overtime as the No. 2-seeded Golden Bears came back from 10 points down with less than seven minutes left.

Cal (32-3) is the first team from the western U.S. other than Stanford to reach the Final Four since Long Beach State in 1988.

The Bears took control in overtime when Afure Jemerigbe made a three-point shot for a 59-55 lead with 2:48 left. It was just the third time this season the No. 4-seeded Bulldogs (28-7) lost after leading at halftime. They were up, 31-26, at the break.

In the national semifinals Sunday at New Orleans, Cal will play the winner of Tuesday’s game between Tennessee and Louisville.

No. 1 Connecticu­t 83, No. 2 Kentucky 53: Breanna Stewart scored 21 points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 17 in the regional final at Bridgeport, Conn., to help the Huskies advance to a record sixth consecutiv­e Final Four berth. Connecticu­t broke a tie with Stanford (2008-12), Louisiana State (2004-08) and itself (200004) by reaching the Final Four again.

In the national semifinals Sunday at New Orleans, the Huskies (33-4) will face the winner of Tuesday’s game between Notre Dame and Duke.

The Wildcats (30-6) had a 23-22 lead with nine minutes left before halftime, then scored only three points in the rest of the half.

Kentucky missed 13 of its final 14 shots in the half, the only basket coming when Jelleah Sidney banked in a three-point shot from the wing.
