Suspect held after car crashes into store

Authorities say the man also attacked people in the San Jose Wal-mart, injuring 4.

A man who allegedly crashed his car through a Wal-Mart and began attacking people inside, injuring four, was being held without bail Monday in San Jose.

Authorities said Haamid Ade Zaid, 33, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run, and drug use.

Authorities told the Associated Press they believe he was under the influence of drugs.

“People were running out of the store, people were crying,” San Jose police Officer Albert Morales told the San Jose Mercury News about the Sunday incident.

“People were just confused about what was going on.”

One shopper told the newspaper that other customers tried to hold the man down. About 70 people saw the attack, police said.

Zaid was arrested after a brief struggle with police, Morales told The Times. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the suspect was undergoing drug testing and a mental evaluation.

Authorities are still investigating what prompted the attack late Easter morning.

“We don’t know if there was an intended target or not,” Morales told The Times.

The red two-door car driven in the incident ended up 10 to 20 feet inside the store, Morales said. The suspect exited the vehicle, picked up a blunt object and began the assault, he said.

One customer was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, Morales said. Three others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sharon Kaye said the car sideswiped hers as she was driving in the parking lot. She told the San Jose Mer- cury News the man drove through the lot before crashing into the store.

“Oh, my goodness, he’s going to hurt someone,” Kaye said she thought to herself.

When the first police officer arrived, Kaye told him he needed to call for backup.

“I stood there shocked,” she told the newspaper. “It was very scary.”
